Photo by Timothy Mucciante GOODRICH – The Goodrich varsity football team is headed back to the state playoffs, clinching a berth after a 36-6 road win Friday at Byron. The win was spearheaded by a breakout second quarter where Goodrich outscored the Eagles, 28-6.

There was no scoring in the opening quarter, but just 11 seconds into the second frame, Goodrich’s Tylor Leedom connected with Latrell Fordham for an 88-yard touchdown. Less than two minutes later, Byron answered with a 26-yard scoring toss, but the ensuing point after attempt failed. Goodrich’s next drive culminated in Joe Toporek’s 26-yard rushing score.

Once the Martians got the ball back, Toporek was at it again, this time pounding it across the goal line from a yard out. Goodrich put a cap on the first half when Leedom found Tyson Davis for a 50-yard score with less than two minutes left in the half.

After the fireworks of the second quarter, the second half was relatively quiet until halfway through the fourth when Leedom and Davis hooked up again, this time for an 80-yard touchdown.

Leedom ended the day going 4-for-15 for 265 yards and three scores and Toporek ran 15 times for 56 yards and two touchdowns. Davis’ two touchdowns were his only catches of the night, spanning 130 yards, and he had an interception on defense, as did Aaron Moore.

The Martians, 6-1, will face a stiff test on Friday when Montrose comes to town.
