Photo by Timothy Mucciante GRAND BLANC — The Grand Blanc varsity football team had its home opener at Frank Thomas Field last Thursday and pulled out the victory in a back-and-forth affair over Westland John Glenn, 26-21. Grand Blanc stuck quickly, forcing a three-and-out before blocking John Glenn’s punt to put the offense in excellent field position, which led to Grand Blanc taking an early 6-0 lead after an unsuccessful point after attempt.

John Glenn would respond by going to the air to take a 7-6 edge, then they added to the advantage to go up 14-6 at the half following an extensive drive.

The second half, however, would tell quite a different story. Just 6:19 into the third quarter, Grand Blanc would take the lead after scoring a pair of touchdowns to go up 20-14. The Rockets would answer at the end of the third quarter to get back on top, 21-20.

The offense found itself in good field position in the fourth quarter and capitalized on it to take a 26-21 lead. A long kickoff led to the Rockets having a strong return, almost for a touchdown, before kicker Timmy Hayden made a score-saving tackle. John Glenn got extremely close to scoring, but its drive ended with the Bobcats breaking up a pass in the end zone.

That left Grand Blanc backed up against its own end zone, but it was able to find some breathing room and eventually run out the clock.

The Bobcats, now 2-0, host Plymouth on Friday.
