Local students win Optimist Club honors

GRAND BLANC — The Grand Blanc Optimist Club held its 12th Annual Optimist International Oratorical Contest on March 22 at Grand Blanc High School. This Oratorical Contest takes place all over the world with all of the contestants speaking on one topic, which this year was “What the World Gains from Optimism.”

This year’s contest included a total of 18 students who all portrayed their excitement and passion for making the world a better place to live. The audience appeared to be inspired and feeling optimistic about the future following the student presentations. Speeches were judged based on Poise, Content, Delivery, Presentation and Overall Effectiveness.

As a result, the High School 1st place winner was Kayla Grundy, 2nd place Lu Nicolai and 3rd Jason Caine. The middle school winners were in 1st place, Katlyn Kaza, 2nd Annabeth Towarnicky, and 3rd Ava Ward. Grundy and Caine will move onto the Regional Contest on April 22, 2016 at Clawson High School.

Grundy started her speech out telling the audience. “I’m going to give you a whole new way to look at life. So, turn that frown upside down, and be a little optimistic about my speech.” She then proceeded to lay out a factual and interesting case about the benefits of keeping an optimistic outlook.

The Optimist Club gives special thanks to: Laura Jones from Grand Blanc West Middle School, Pat Nelson from Grand Blanc East Middle School and Dana Bleicher from Grand Blanc High School for inspiring these outstanding students.

Additional thanks are owed to our sponsors: McDonalds, Brose Electric, and Giffels Webster. The Grand Blanc Optimist Club is a local service organization with a mission of “Bringing out the Best in Kids”.
