Courtesy OXFORD – Zack Hopkins tied for second with a 74 and three other Grand Blanc golfers scored in the 70s as the Bobcats won the Division 1 regional last Wednesday at Boulder Pointe.

Seniors Noah Troyer and Logan Price tied for ninth with 78s and sophomore Nick Bruett was 14th with a 79 to give third-ranked Grand Blanc a 309 total, five strokes better than sixth-ranked Midland. Junior Austin Belcher, who led the Bobcats with a 76 in the district, shot 82.

Hopkins, a sophomore, wasn’t even in the district lineup as Grand Blanc coach Joe Gainey continues to push the right buttons with a deep roster.

“Our success recently has been improved by the total depth of our team,” said Gainey. “Golf is one of those sports where the ball can bounce the wrong way, leaving even one of our strongest players at a disadvantage. However, as a team we have the potential to pick each other up and score low.”

The title qualified the Bobcats for the state finals this Friday and Saturday at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University. Midland also earned a spot and Rochester Adams shot 319 to grab the third and final berth in the state meet.

“We expected to be playing on the last day of golf, and the boys are ready to take advantage of years of hard work to succeed at the state championship,” said Gainey.

Flushing was fourth with 321, followed by Rochester 322, Troy 326, Traverse City West 330, Troy Athens 338, Clarkston 343, Saginaw Heritage 348, Lapeer 352 and Midland Dow 365.

Flushing’s Joe Montpas was medalist with a 3-under-par 69 and grabbed one of the three individual qualifying berths, along with teammate Derek Black (76) and Troy’s Trevor Davis (74). – D.N.

The Martians narrowly missed qualifying for the state meet as a team during the regionals at Calderone Farms Golf Course in Grass Lake last Wednesday. Goodrich placed fourth with a 307, just missing the top-three finish required to go to the state finals. East Lansing finished first with a 293, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep was second with 302 and Chelsea third with 304.

However, a pair of Martians were able to earn individual qualifier spots as Trent Barth shot a 73 to be the No. 2 individual qualifier and Noah Rocheleau was No. 3 with a 74. Ben Locey and Ty Mero tied each other in 25th place with 80s and Josh Senkowski was 33rd with an 82.

“The regional had five of the top 10 ranked teams in Div. 2,” said Goodrich coach Don Brandt. “Goodrich had a great season as a team with senior Josh Senkowski stepping up big in a couple of tournaments to lead the team with the low score. Junior Ty Mero and sophomore Ben Locey played solid all year and show great promise for next year.”

Barth and Rocheleau now move on to the Div. 2 state finals at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek on June 10 and 11. – B.P.
