The event featured National speaker Jenny Barkac and focused on teaching parents, teachers, and students different coping strategies to help overcome stress.

Barkac spent part of last week at McGrath Elementary working with students and teachers in the classroom and her visit culminated with an informative session for parents. During the event, Principal Cheryl Hemond greeted families at the door and walked students to different workshop rooms. “We want to teach kids how to handle frustration and stress, but also teach parents how to recognize when kids are stressed … because life is stressful.”

Students (preschool to 5th grade) were invited to participate in various activities.

Personalizing daily journals and making their own colorful stress balls were just two of the fun and hands-on workshops available.

Families reconnected for pizza and pop in the cafeteria where $25 gift cards to local restaurants were raffled off. “We wanted to support the local businesses in our community,” said Hemond. — By Paula K. Schmidt
