Old Newsboys Christmas sign-up is underway

FLINT— Enrollment in the Old Newsboys of Flint’s Christmas Program runs through Dec. 23. Applicants may sign-up at the Old Newsboys office at 6255 Taylor Drive in Flint. Sign-up hours are from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday. (Closed from 12-1 p.m. daily). Sign-up will also be open Dec. 5, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

Walmart, fire and police & the Salvation Army to “Fill the Truck” with toys

BURTON — The Burton Walmart and the Burton Fire Department are holding the “Fill the Truck” Toy Drive, which will collect hundreds of toys for children in need in partnership with The Salvation Army.

Shoppers visiting Walmart stores across Genesee County participating in “Fill the Truck” through Dec. 13 will have the opportunity to drop off new, unwrapped toys at the trucks or bins at the store.

The toys collected will be distributed to parents to give to their children on Christmas morning. — G.G.

Starting a Business workshop in Flint

FLINT — A free workshop on “Starting a Business” will be presented at Kettering University in Flint on Dec. 8 from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

“Starting a Business” is designed for individuals who are considering self-employment, or who may be at the beginning stages of starting a business. This introductory workshop covers the process of starting and operating a business, evaluating market potential for products/services, costs and financing options, plus business planning.

VG’s to host program for local food banks

GENESEE COUNTY — VG’s stores are holding their annual Scan Away Hunger program through Dec. 12 to raise money and food for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and other partner agencies. This program has been held at VG’s for more than 10 years.

Last year, more than $6,200 was collected during the two-week program. Customers will have the opportunity to give the gift of food with $1, $5 or $10 donations or to give $17, which will purchase a full bag of groceries.

All VG’s stores are participating in Scan Away Hunger. The following local stores will donate proceeds to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, which serves more than 400 agencies in eastern Michigan in 22 counties: VG’s Davison, 8503 Davison, Davison; VG’s Fenton, 18005 Silver Parkway, Fenton; VG’s Genesee, 7461 N. Genesee, Genesee; and VG’s North Fenton, 1390 N. Leroy, North Fenton. — G.G.
