Goodrich top seed in GAC tournament

Photo by Michael Selecky Goodrich’s Dylan Elizondo sprints up the field. Photo by Michael Selecky GOODRICH — The Goodrich boys’ soccer team is the top seed in the annual Genesee Area Conference tournament, and took on No. 8-seeded LakeVille Monday at Goodrich, shutting out the Falcons, 13-0.

The Martians began the scoring early, and often, with Garrett Nitschke scoring at 36:45 assisted by Ian Gannon. Nitschek scored again at 34:52 assisted by Brock Sommers. Gannon then burned the net at 29:21 assisted by Derek Sanborn. Clay Kurkechian got in on the action with a goal at 28:52 off the feed from James Eickhoff, then helped Gannon score at 28:32. Fikret Alimov scored at 27:01 off a pass from Eickhoff and Dylan Elizondo scored at 24:44 assisted by Jacob Crosby. Danny Garr toed in a shot at 24:00 off a helper from Alimov, and Nitschke found Alimov open for a score at 18:09. Elizondo got his second goal at 13:30 assisted by Luke Smith, then Kurkechian and Eickoff teamed up at 9:10 to blister in another goal. Garr went solo at 6:50 for his second goal and Kurkechian and Smith hooked up at 5:50 for the final goal. In net, David Doherty got the shut out.

Last Tuesday at Montrose, the Martians shut out the Rams, 5-0. Nitschke scored Goodrich’s first goal at 31:12 off the feed from Alimov, then got help from Gannon, time not recorded. Austin Scott would go on to score at 14:10 assisted by Nathan Bell to end the first-half scoring. Trevor Barthel opened the second-half scoring at 36:19 assisted by Sanborn, then Kyle Rapphun rippled the mesh assisted by Sommers. Doherty earned the shutout in net.

When Goodrich took on LakeVille last Monday in a regular-season game, the results were similar, with the Martians coming out on top, 8-0.

Nitschke scored at 38:46 with the assist going to Garr, who then slipped in a solo shot at 35:21. Sanborn found the back of the net at 34:54 assisted by Scott, then Gannon scored at 32:32 assisted by Nitschke. Eickoff needed no help on his goal at 31:27, but Elizondo took a pass from Crosby at 25:16 to score and Doherty got his goal at 13:52 to end the half. Alimov scored at 30:12 in the second half assisted by Barthel and Doherty combined with Macker Wilson for the shutout.

In the next round of the GAC tournament, Goodrich played Dryden at home yesterday after we went to press. — L.P.

GRAND BLANC

The Bobcats defeated Howell on Tuesday, 2-0. Grand Blanc scored two second half goals en route to the win. Dominic Mastromatteo scored off an assist from Ali Mukhtar and Brennan Smith scored from Chris Sullivant. Lewis Jones IV and Pearce Skinner combined for the shutout in net.

Last Thursday, Grand Blanc beat Milford, 1-0, on Senior Night. Nick Berklich scored on a pass from Mastromatteo. Joe Taranto made four saves for the shutout.

The Howell victory setup a division title game with third ranked and undefeated Brighton today.

Grand Blanc in now 9-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 KLAA. — E.H.
