Student Painter
GBHS graduate launches exterior painting business
GRAND BLANC — As a sophomore in college, Grand Blanc native Kyle Campbell is preparing to take the entrepreneur world by storm with his own summer exterior painting company through Student Painters.
The Student Painters company offers students a unique, hands-on experience in the business world by providing them with mentors and the tools needed to successfully complete an internship or co-op in which they are the managers of their own operation.
As a business management major at Western Michigan University hoping to one day own his own car dealership, Campbell, 20, said when Student Painters came to speak to one of his classes he felt the opportunity was one that would be helpful in obtaining his future goals.
After attending an informational meeting and going through the interview process, Campbell was hired and began his sales training.
“I’ve run my own lawn care service company while I was still in high school so this is a similar experience,” Campbell said. “The only difference is when I did lawn care that was more of me doing all the work whereas this is teaching me to work with others, both higher and lower than me, as well as seeking and hiring employees.”
Campbell’s painting season, which includes all exterior and staining services, won’t officially kick off until May 1, and he said the experience has already been very educational.
“It is amazing what I have learned in the last four months alone,” Campbell said. “It is a lot of hard work, but really worth it.”
To date, Campbell said he is getting a great response from the Grand Blanc community.
“Business is going great,” said Campbell, who has been using his weekends going door-to-door for sales, marketing his business and interviewing to fill open positions on his team. “It gets me out and meeting all the people I grew up next to and didn’t know.”
For those interested in his painting services, Campbell said the process is rather simple.
The first few weeks on the job, Campbell will be accompanied by a mentor who will go with him to speak with customers on what they wish to have done in regards to their homes and help in providing the free estimates. Once Campbell is familiar and comfortable with the process, he will begin doing the work on his own, calling upon mentors when and if any questions arise.
“People might think I am too young, but this company is geared toward teaching this stuff. This is what they do and have been doing for over 25 years,” Campbell said. “Anyone is capable of doing this if they really want to and put in the effort.”
To schedule an appointment with Campbell, contact him at 810-813- 1820. He will be providing painting services through the end of August.
