GB, Goodrich student count up

GENESEE COUNTY— Officials for both the Grand Blanc and Goodrich school districts reported increases in student enrollment as compared to the previous year following last week’s count day.

Grand Blanc District Superintendent Dr. Norm Abdella said the Feb. 8 student count day results revealed the district has 8,717 students enrolled, which is an increase of 125 students since last February.

“We are all very pleased with the results,” Abdella said. “The entire district works together in an effort to retain those numbers year after year.”

Despite an increase from the previous year, Abdella said the district did see a decrease in 23 students from the last count in October.

“That has been our trend annually where we have lower student counts this time of year. I’ve seen it be as high as over 100 students down around this count,” Abdella said. “So based on patterns, this was good news.”

Similarly, the Goodrich School District also recorded an increase in student enrollment.

Joy Moll, executive administrative assistant, said the count day showed the district had an increase of 41 students from last February with 2,156 students. Moll said the new student count numbers also shows a slight increase of 12 students since October.

Goodrich District Superintendent John Fazer said he was very pleased to see Goodrich not only maintain, but increase its student numbers throughout the year.

“I think the significant point to note is we are up 12 students this February count,” Fazer said. “Last February we were down 22 students, so I am happy to see the downward trend end this year.”

Fazer said moving forward he is optimistic that the district will again see positive numbers during its student count days.

“I think we didn’t lose as many Goodrich residents out of our district this year,” Fazer said. “I think we will see that continue in the year to come as well.”
