HAP welcomes Dr. Munir as chief medical officer

DETROIT — Health Alliance Plan (HAP) has appointed Naim Munir, M.D. as senior vice president and chief medical officer, effective Aug. 1.

“Dr. Munir is a welcome addition to HAP’s senior leadership team, which is collectively responsible for the strategic direction and operation of the company,” said William Alvin, president and CEO. “He is a highly seasoned clinical health plan leader with a proven track record in leading results oriented, high performance teams. His passion for measuring and improving the health of populations is evidenced by his service of 10 years as a physician reviewer for the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and through his appointment to NCQA’s national Review Oversight Committee for two terms.”

Munir is charged with leading the development and implementation of clinical and operational programs in partnership with the region’s health care providers. He will lead all of HAP’s health care related activities, including: Network Development and Provider Relations, Provider Contracting, Health Care Management, Health Management Services, Credentialing, Pharmacy Care Management, Quality Management and Health Performance Management.

Over the course of his career, Munir has held key leadership roles at health plans spanning the entire spectrum of commercial, Medicare and Medicaid operations and products. He joins HAP from the Principal Financial Group in Des Moines, Iowa, where he served as chief medical officer at the Health Division of the public traded company with insured health insurance operations in 32 states and Administrative Services Only (ASO) health insurance operations nationwide. Prior to that, he served as executive medical director for quality and care management at Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey as well as chief operating officer at Amerigroup Corporation of New Jersey and vice president for health services at PacifiCare’s Southwest region.

Munir received his Medical Degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed his family practice residency at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. Munir and his family are relocating from Iowa to Northville. — G.G.
