GENESEE COUNTY — As we come to the end of another beautifully played, yet sublimely unappreciated campaign of girls’ high school basketball, there lies a canyon of possibilities just waiting to be explored in the form of postseason play.
With district games taking place Feb. 18, 20, and 22, let’s take a look at what lies ahead for our area teams:

No. 56-B, Birch Run
Goodrich, who currently stands 14-2 overall and 14-2 league, is being faced with quite a formidable lineup of opponents, which includes fellow Genesee Area Conference-Red members LakeVille and Mt. Morris. The district also includes Birch Run, Flint Powers and Flint Northwestern Prep Academy.
The Lady Martians are led by senior Kortni Elsworth, who surpassed the milestone of 1,000 career points earlier this season.
In the initial round, Goodrich has a bye and will play Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the Mt. Morris vs. Flint Northwestern game on Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
“I think we can match up well with all the teams in the district and are able to play many different styles against teams that are big and quick,” said coach Jason Gray. “I’m really excited. I think we have a good chance at a district title.”
As an independent, Northwestern hasn’t found this season to be an inviting one, posting a record of 2-13 overall and 1-9 against other independent squads such as Flint Beecher (1-13, 1-8).
Mt. Morris, with a season record of 4-13 and all of their contests coming against conference foes, has also been challenged this year and will need strong performances from players such as Holly Reed and Brittney Childers in order to have any chance of derailing the Lady Martians.
On the bracket’s other side, Powers (15-2, 10-1) has a first- round bye and will play Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. against the winner of the Birch Run (11-5, 10-0) vs. LakeVille (5-12, 5-10) game, which takes place on Feb. 18 at 6 p.m.
No. 9-A, Fenton
The Lady Bobcats, who have a record of 12-8 overall and 6-4 league, may feel a bit like a fish out of water, as they and Flint Southwestern compete in a district that contains four members of the Flint Metro League in Fenton, Holly, Brandon and Swartz Creek.
Season leaders for Grand Blanc include Nikki Steffes, who leads the team in overall scoring with 184 points for an average of 9.2 per game. Managing 158 points this season for an average of 7.9 per game is Emily Rodriguez, followed by Kylie Welch with 136 and Rachel Wilson at 131.
Leading the team in rebounds is Rodriguez, while Steffes, Wilson and Rachel Lawrence are tied at the top with 36 steals apiece. Welch is also tops on the squad for assists with 47 and Wilson is second with 40.
In round one, Grand Blanc will square off against Brandon (7-10, 7-10) on Feb. 18 at 6.p.m. The Blackhawks, who currently stand sixth in the league, are led by players that include Sherry Lawrence and Danielle Kwasborski.
If there are able to work their way past this road block, the Lady Bobcats will go on to play Flint Southwestern (11-4, 5-1), who currently stands in fifth place in the Saginaw Valley, on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m.
The rest of the district consists of Fenton (17-2, 16-2) and Swartz Creek (4-15, 4-15), who face off Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m., with the winner playing Holly (10-8, 10-8) two days later at the same time.
